No GST/HST Tax Break for Disc Golf

No GST/HST Tax Break for Disc Golf

What's the deal with the GST/HST Tax Break?

Well, the GST/HST tax break is a nice little perk that applies to certain items in Canada, giving you a break on the Goods and Services Tax (GST) or the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST). Unfortunately, disc golf gear is not one of those items.

Qualifying Items

Types of items that qualify for the GST/HST break are “everyday essentials” as determined by our federal government -- prepared foods, snack foods and alcohol that are usually not exempt from GST/HST, restaurant meals and drinks, children’s wear and toys intended for children under 14 years old, video game consoles and controllers, physical books and Christmas trees. For the full list of inclusions and restrictions refer to the Government of Canada's announcement.

Qualifying Period

No GST/HST will be charged on a qualifying item, as long as it is both paid for in full and made available to the buyer between December 14, 2024 and February 15, 2025.

Why doesn't the tax break apply to Disc Golf Gear?

It's a mystery why some items are included and not others. Is a Christmas tree a must-have? We should “eat, drink and be merry” by indulging in snack foods, alcohol, served foods and non-physical activities?

If you have time and the means, I say substitute some of those indulgences by treating yourself to a new disc, get outdoors, and actively have fun with some fellow disc enthusiasts.
